I've missed the beginning of this thread, but if you can use DSLINE, then a simpler approach to those mentioned might be :
REMOTE HELLO username/password;DSLINE=the_system_to_be_accessed
You are in effect truly testing the username/password and bypassing other related problems, as you are attempting to actually log on (without logging off !). A simple test showed that it will return a series of CIERRORs specifying *exactly* what went wrong and ends with a generic "Remote command error (5402)".
Just don't forget to issue a DSLINE the_system_to_be_accessed;CLOSE when CIERROR=0 ;)

Subject: Using MPE to authenticate users for Autobahn Applications
Thank you to all who have responded.
The method I had devised (but not implimented) would attempt to stream a
job using the supplied Username and Password. Then check HPCIERR to see
if the job launched successfully. I've just learned that this is the
method used by Speedware when they wish to authenticate a user on the Hp
3000.
This method will run into problems dependant upon the job limit and the
current job fence, with virtually no way of detecting this failure.
Another method suggested to me by Patrick Fioravanti is for the running
batch job that provides Speedware Resource Management services to have AM
capability. Then perform a :LISTUSER;PASS. Pipe the output to a file and
examine the contents of the file. This method should work fine for my
purposes... but I'm always willing to listen.
Thanks again,
Jim
