I have to agree with Donna. Not only is the SYSDIAG/SCSIDDS solution not
elegant it is downright dangerous. I would only use it as a last resort to
reset a tape drive to avoid a reboot. I would not use it to check the status
of the drive.

Several enhancements would be nice.
o DEVCTRL or similar utility to report status of a drive.
o A utility to report the tape logs such as access counters, error counts,
etc.
o Turbostore should report the tape stats after each store. It would be real
nice to know what kind of compression ratio you are getting and how much of
the tape capacity is being used, not to mention the error counts and number
of passes.
