Like the $250 phone bill for ONE 50-minute modem call at the Madrid Interex
conference :-(.
Actually (gee, I hope the original poster is around to see all this advice :-),
AT&T (and probably others by now) have set up their own services in a
number of countries. You dial a local phone number to get an AT&T operator,
and if you use your calling card the call is charged at AT&T domestic
direct-dial rates. The catch is that you must have an AT&T calling card and
AT&T domestic service, which is how they get the local authorities to let
them do it. Check with your favorite (or least-loathed) long-distance
carrier for a list of countries and phone numbers.
