Thanks to all for their helpful suggestions.  I've determined that we have a combination of old tapes and a lot of data.

And, Mr. Dolliver's email led me to the REPORT command that helped me find 8GB of data that I don't need to back up.

Since we're planning on retiring my beloved HP3000 around December, 2014, I think we're good.

Do you track tape usage? DDS tapes are formatted into groups. As these groups are used they can be marked as bad, due to among other things: too many uses, too many errors. Thus, they will become logically 'shorter' over time.
