Yep, error counters in a switch can be a life-saver. (Besides HP Procurves,
the cheapest switch I have seen with usable counters is the Netgear GSM7224).

Any pattern to specific lights on the switch being on steadily when things are
bad ? That's the poor man's error counter.

Also, the "sporadic" bit intrigues me. Does the timing correspond to when
users run any PCs apps that could swamp the network? Does it only slow down
when the hacker in Bulgaria downloads your confidential data or has your
machines spit out tons of spam ??

Any supposedly non-related changes lately, like new equipment or cabling ?
(I had a problem once after the people we shared an old building with put in a
surveillance system and ran those cables too close to mine).

If serial connections are really always ok, does that imply....
1 Network problem elsewhere, NOT between the HP3000 and the DTC ?
2 Interference on frequencies that mess with lan traffic but not serial ?

If you are staying with networks for sometime to come, I strongly suggest you
get some sort of analyser (eg Exinda) which can show you all sorts of
statistics and data and help locate problems. The cheapest alternative may be
a managed switch which will also show you errors, traffic loads and their
sources. One of the good things HP still does is Procurve switches, warranted
FOREVER.

John,

A good place to start is making sure that both the HP and network switch
port it's plugged into are configured the same.

If it's a 10Bt card, then it should be half-duplex, no auto and the
switch should be set likewise. If one is set for auto and the other
not, it can present in the fashion you describe.

100Bt should be full, no auto, if my memory serves me.

With networking there's as many possibilities for performance
difficulties as there are devices on the network.

It could also be due to traffic on the 3000s subnet that should have
been routed otherwise.

And ...and...

Jack

I'm forwarding this for a friend who is having sporadic network
slowdowns. We've replaced cables, terminators, lan cards. The problem
appears to be out on the lan somewhere. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks,

HP3000 MPE/ix 6.0 patch 2

We are having a network problems with our HP3000. Running
Minisoft
92 v5.4:32 at our client locations we are getting very slow responses or
even timing out. We have replaced our network lan card in the CPU, we
replaced the network cable to the crossover adapter; we have replaced
our crossover adapter, we changed the fiber optic cables and went to a
different port on the switch and with no change in response time.
We have shut the system down and rebooted with no change. The
serial connections work fine. We have made no configuration changes in
over a year. This started happening a few weeks ago seems to be getting
worse.
We can go to a command prompt and ping the CPU and it may come back fine
a couple of times then it might time out.
