Fortunately your DAT drive plays no role in this. If DATs were involved, I
would have been in big trouble too, since until I upgraded to a DDS3 two weeks
ago, I used to only have a "DDS0" - 60 meter tapes, no compression.
Here's an alternate method when your PC is connected to the Internet via modem,
and your PC and 3000 are both on a LAN.
Visit http://itrc.hp.com and download the Patch/iX store file to your PC with
your web browser. Then invoke the command-line ftp utility, and upload the
Patch/iX store file to your 3000:
Microsoft(R) Windows 98
(C)Copyright Microsoft Corp 1981-1998.
C:\Temp>ftp xyz
Connected to xyz.
220 HP ARPA FTP Server [A0009C04] (C) Hewlett-Packard Co. 1990

ftp> put patchix60.store /tmp/patchix60.store;rec=128,,f,binary;code=store

ftp> quit

Then log on to your 3000 and :RESTORE the files (change :VSTORE to :RESTORE):
:file it=/tmp/patchix60.store,old;dev=disc
:vstore *it;@[log in to unmask]@;show

Note that there's no need to mess with FROMBYTE in this method.
Keep reading below, because I need to correct something I wrote previously...

I stand corrected. The ITRC MPE patch download page says you can now download
Patch/iX via ftp directly from the ITRC:
You can pull the file directly from the IT Resource Center's anonymous ftp
site:
:ftp.arpa.sys ftp.itrc.hp.com
