This is a purely academic question, but...

According to the sales agreement we have for our 918 (I assume it is an HP
standard agreement), "Bundled Software or Firmware provided to Customer may
only be used when operating the associated Device in configurations as sold
or subsequently upgraded by HP.  Customer may transfer Firmware only upon
transfer of the associated Device".

IANAL, but I think this prohibits you from buying an MPE license and
running it on non-HP hardware.
