It's too late, I realize, but here is how you could have done it:
 %REPEAT
 %SETVAR CURRFILENAME FINFO("!MPEXCURRENTFILE","FNAME")
 %SETVAR DOWNSFNAME DWNS(CURRFILENAME)
 %RENAME !CURRFILENAME,./!DOWNSFNAME
 %FORFILES <fileset>

The first SETVAR isolates the file name portion of the fully-qualified name.
