Ahh, J2EE. Yes, I think a few on this list have mentioned the seemingly
unnecessary complexity for Enterprise programming.

There are quite a few out there besides Sun, I use Programmer Studio for
everything from Cobol to Fortran to Java. Some other Java IDEs I have not
tried much (some free):

http://www.netbeans.org/
http://www.jcreator.com/
http://www.borland.com/jbuilder/
http://www.intellij.com/idea/
http://www.eclipse.org/

I agree with you but I think you get what you pay for. VS.NET is not cheap
but it's a decent and consistent environment. I'm sure you can get a pretty
good Java IDE for (half) the price of VS.NET.

http://www.go-mono.com/ looks promising but again, I read about how MSN
messes up Opera browsers and Opera in kind has been messing with the MSN
site and you wonder what roadblocks might come down the road.

There should be tools for all levels of programming and if that's what you
want, there's nothing wrong with that. Productivity and maintainability are
more important than ever.
