Quoting Craig:

I am surprised I haven't caught a lot of slack from the vendors.... but it's
not like I am telling them something they didn't know.

I do see a big push away from Cognos... remember, one of the reasons to buy
Cognos was the hardware portability.

It's a shame that in an environment where processing power is doubling every
18 months, it's the software vendor that feels the need to reap the rewards.

I do see the big push towards Open Software as being caused by the same
marketing tactics in "other" platforms.
----------

I was in a meeting at an HMO with about 30 people discussing a new, large
scale project wrapped around AMISYS. Someone from one of the vendors of a
third party software product that processes data from AMISYS and out to
other platforms asked to the assemblage in general "what do you think of
Cognos products?" After a long pause where no one spoke, I said that I
thought Cognos products were a panacea sold to upper management and everyone
else has had to suffer with them ever since. After a few moments of stunned
looks and dropped jaws, I heard several very quiet "Amen"'s from the group
(mainly the programming staff working at the HMO - a couple of managers
too).

I've had several instances of VP's of IS sitting down to crunch the numbers
on system upgrades and license fees from Cognos vs. upgrading the system and
writing whatever was needed in HP Cobol - and numerous times the budget
numbers were not in favor of Cognos.
