Compaq announced today that they will convert their 64-bit commuting
platforms over to Intel's IA-64 chips by 2004 and are apparently selling
their remaining Alpha architecture assets to Intel.

There will be one more generation of Alpha CPUs (code named EV7 I believe)
but it looks like that's going to be it for Alpha, since Intel will likely
absorb whatever talent and intellectual property they can salvage from Alpha
into their IA-64 program.

One of the last remaining vestiges of the DEC era fades away.
