Steve,

So long as you use your bookcase to store your diplomas (your credentials),
your most sacred beliefs (your creeds), your private papers (your
confidentials), and your account receivables (your credits), you officially
have a credenza, regardless of what it looks like. That's what the word means
in Italian -- and is no more than a "vulgarized" version of the Latin word,
credentia.
