Hi Charles (and others),

The company that I work for will be offering "UNIX for MPE users" classes
starting in January of 2002. I have worked on MPE systems since the mid-1980s
and HP-UX systems for the past 8 years. It is so sad to hear about the
beginning of the end for the 3000. It is a very unique user community. I have
already contacted Interex about doing a one-day seminar at HP World next
September on this topic and am in contact with someone about doing a "Windows
for MPE users" seminar. I would really like to see HP 3000 users continue to
be able to support Interex. I think these sort of workshops would provide the
type of assistance the users group is all about.

Although I work more with HP-UX than MPE, I still have tried to stay up to date
with the 3000 and have continued to do seminars at HP World (AutoRAID and XP on
the HPe3000). I started my career on the 3000 after a brief encounter with the
IBM System/34-36. I fell in love with the community. I joined the social ranks
as making myself a fool impersonating Cher, Tina Turner, and a member of the
B52s at various user group gatherings. There was nothing like an HP3000 user
group meeting in the 80s and early 90s. (And I have the videos to proof it...
Yes, some of you should fear.. I'm transfering these to Windows Media Files!).

My husband has worked on the 3000 since high school. He went from Operator to
Programmer to Sys Admin. He doesn't know any other operating system. I talked
to a customer the other day whose husband had been let go, he also only has
3000 skills. So, for those people, this announcement is also very personal.
Their ability to make a living is threatened. I know this because I am married
to someone going through this right now.

I also feel for the companies that make a living from 3000 services or
products. I know many of these people, as many of you do. The staff from Lund
used to come to my office at night and use our 925 to convert their SOS
software on, because they didn't have an MPE/iX system yet. (Yes, I'm dating
myself here). With the slow down in the economy, this news couldn't have come
at a harder time. There is a big shock wave rolling through the community now.

The good news is that the 3000 community has always been strong, and its
members will come together to help companies and individuals make their way.
