Subject: New Update Media Format for HP 3000 MPE/iX
Author: TODD HIROZAWA at HP-Cupertino,om1
Date: 4/27/95 4:46 PM

Hewlett-Packard's Commercial Systems Division (CSY) is considering a
new update media format for HP 3000 MPE/iX computer systems and wants
customer feedback. The new media is a single DDS tape (digital data
storage) with the complete MPE/iX FOS, SLT, Subsystems and PowerPatch.
This will reduce update steps, complexity and time.

Today HP ships customers three tapes to update an HP 3000 system.
During the update process the customer has to run AUTOINST to create a
CSLT/STORE (customized system load tape). CSY wants to create and
deliver the CSLT/STORE in place of the current MPE FOS, SLT and
Subsystem tapes. Customers will skip the AUTOINST step and update
their system with the CSLT/STORE. A tool will restore the FOS and
Subsystem STORE files and stream any installation files (I-files).
The CSLT will include the latest PowerPatch or general release patches.
Site specific patches will still have to be applied.

This new format will be available only on DDS media. Customers who
receive updates on 6250 BPI 1/2" tape will still receive three tapes.
Customers who customize CSLTs for different HP 3000 systems should
consider CD-ROM media. The HP 3000 will evolve to CD-ROM software
distribution by the end of 1997.

CSY is interested in your feedback. Please respond to this message. We
will pursue an investigation if there is sufficient interest in the
     CSLT/STORE update format.
