I just finished wading through all sorts of IBM press info
and an interesting article on interoperability using object
technology (as in Corba). Unfortunately, missing in all this
hoopla has been HP. While IBM is adding Corba support to *all*
of their operating environments (including the as/400), HP still
only plays distributed objects on HP-UX.

Unless HP gets a vision that the real move to interoperability
is distributed objects and not unix-like clone operating systems
they won't see the business case for making the HP 3000 play
in this environment.

If the HP 3000 doesn't get this technology then it will *NOT* be
able to play on a level playing field with the other systems of
similar ilk.

HP has said (most recently) they want the HP 3000 to be 'just another
box' on the network that we can all use to do our computing on.

Well, that box better have Corba support or no-one will use it
(after a fashion) for anything but computer trivia.

My prediction: HP kills the HP 3000 indirectly by not bothering to
offer reasonable Corba support. Then they complain
that no one is writing software for it anymore or
buying any boxes. 'It was the market, not us'.

My response: If IBM can do it for the as/400, HP can sure as well
do it for the HP 3000. Heck, HP is already a player in
this technology with their Orb+ product for UX. If HP
doesn't address this then I think we should hold them
responsible for not fully supporting the platform.

I definitely do not like what I see here.
