I also have a question respecting hooking up late model printers to
the HP3000.

We currently employ four Lexmark T632s that are spooled from the
HP3000. These are ageing and reliability has become a concern. We
have been offered the Kyocera FS4200DN as a suitable replacement. The
Kyocera reportedly has the following specifications:

PRINT Processor
PowerPC 465/750 MHz

Controller language
PRESCRIBE IIe

Emulations
PCL6 (PCL5c / PCL-XL), PostScript 3 (KPDL 3), XPS Direct Print**, PDF
Direct Print 1.7, IBM Proprinter X24E, Epson LQ-850 with automatic
emulation sensing (** requires memory expansion)

Fonts
93 scalable fonts for PCL/PostScript®, 8 fonts for Windows Vista®, 1
Bitmap font, 45 barcodes (e.g. EAN 8, EAN 13, EAN 128) with automatic
generation of checksums as well as support of two-dimensional barcodes
PDF-417 under PRESCRIBE (PCL and other barcodes available as an
option)

Integrated Accounting
100 department codes

Applicable OS
All current Windows operating systems, Mac OS X Version 10.4 or
higher, UNIX, LINUX as well as other operating systems on request

We have been testing one of these as NP4172 using this existing
configuration employed by the Lexmarks:

:cat NPCONFIG
#NPCONFIG 97 DEC 11
#         05 NOV 08
#         12 JUN 01
global    (
          message_interval = 0
          pjl_supported = FALSE
          jam_recovery = FALSE
          )
#Fort Erie JetDirect EX Plus
#4101      (network_address = 204.97.196.100    #Fort Erie
#           TCP_port_number = 9100
#           setup_file = LJ2PORT.HPENV.SYSLOCAL
#           data_timeout = 90
#           snmp_timeout = 30
#          )

#Hamilton HP LaserJet5M Direct Network (Cheques only NP4171)
4171      (network_address = 216.185.71.51
           TCP_port_number = 9100
           setup_file=LJ2PORT.HPENV.SYSLOCAL
          )

#Hamilton Lexmark T632 Direct Network Connection (Imports NP4172)
4172      (network_address = 216.185.71.52
           setup_file=LJ2PORT.HPENV.SYSLOCAL
           TCP_port_number = 9100
           snmp_enabled = FALSE
          )

#Hamilton Lexmark T632 Direct Network Connection (Imports NP4173)
4173      (network_address = 216.185.71.53
           TCP_port_number = 9100
           setup_file=LJ2PORT.HPENV.SYSLOCAL
           snmp_enabled = FALSE
          )

#Hamilton Lexmark T632 Direct Network Connection (Forwarding NP4174)
4174      (network_address = 216.185.71.54
           TCP_port_number = 9100
           setup_file=LJ2PORT.HPENV.SYSLOCAL
           snmp_enabled = FALSE
          )

NP4172 as a Kyocera works most of the time. However, we use Fantasia
for form overlays and have discovered that this printer's memory is
constantly being 'cleared' in some fashion. As the printer is shared
by an MS-AD domain it may be that the printer drivers used there are
clearing the device. I do not know. Also we have problems producing
bar-coded documents (I know, how 1980s). The bar codes are produced
correctly but any text in their immediate vicinity is kerned to the
point that the characters overlap.

My basic question is: Does anyone have one of these printers working
as a spooled device to the HP3000 and if so then what differences, if
any, are there between our and your NPCONFIG? What printer
environment file, if any, do you use? What changes, if any
could/should I make? or is this beast unlikely to ever work with the
HP3000 as the existing printers do?

And lastly: Help me recall just what an HP3000 printer environment
file is, does (presumably sets up the printer settings to use
particular fonts and paper orientation but I am just extrapolating
here0, and how one is created. It is a binary file and at some point
I must have produced one or obtained one from somewhere. But I no
longer recall the details.
