Especially when I can't think of a single thing on the 3000 that is stored
in physical units of 256 byte sectors any more.

MPE disk space is allocated in 4KB "pages", and a physical sector on disk is
generally 512 bytes these days.

But for forward compatibility the "sector" will be with us forever.
