OK, I'll try.

For each network interface on your system, you configure one or more
"neighbor gateways" in NMMGR. The configuration consists of the gateway's
IP address and its subnet mask, and a list of IP addresses or subnets that
are reachable through that gateway. If you put "@" in the IP address field
for a reachable network in one of your gateway definitions, that gateway
will be the default gateway, and any address that isn't explicitly defined
as a reachable address on some other gateway will be routed via the default.
If a specific address is included in subnets that are specified on more than
one gateway, the system will choose the one that reaches the target address
with the fewest hops. This is the only function of the "hops" field in the
gateway configuration. If you wanted to specify a preferred path to a given
subnet, but also make it reachable by a different route as a fall-back, you
can manipulate that preference by specifying fewer hops for the preferred
route. The number need not bear any resemblance to the actual number of
hops.

I hope this helps. If you have any more questions, feel free to contact me
offline.

Subject: Routing

 Hello Folks,

Quick question. Can anyone tell me how to explain TCP/IP routing on the
HP3000 to our MPE Administrator?

On the NT or Unix side, you have the default gateway and then you also have
static routes for specific IP segments.

So for instance, the main network is on 198.168.92.0 (This is also where the
HP3000 is sitting) The default gateway is .8 and it's a firewall. There is
also a router for a frame relay to 10 warehouse locations and it's at .30

So on the NT box, I have the default gateway at .8 and a static route for,
say 192.168.10.0 that moves the data out through the .92.30 address.

Right now the default gateway for the MPE is .92.30 and the frame is working
properly. BUT... if we end up being pushed into EDI that uses the internet,
we are going to have to maybe change that to .92.8.

Or will we?

He was telling about setting up routers and gateways within mpe.. but he
wasn't sure of the details. Can someone give me the 30 second course?

Thanks,
Jeff
