I disagree that HP STORE's proprietary format is a reason not to use an
HP3000 for mission-critical applications.  After all, any disaster recovery
plans for a mission-critical application would include replacing the server
with another HP3000.  (Imagine your manager saying, "The data center burned
down last night.  Convert to Linux by tomorrow morning.") What this really
implies is that if you are migrating away from MPE, any migration planning
needs to include a provision for retrieving offline data after the
migration.  Unless HP publishes the STORE tape format or someone provides a
cross-platform restore capability, that will mean transferring the data to
some other format (e.g., tar) prior to decommissioning the HP3000.  This
will be a HUGE task, in many cases!  I think we will be stumbling upon many
issues of this ilk in the coming months...
