I * believe * that the password hack does NOT work with W2K. I'll try to
boot W2K later and confirm that, but that is my recollection. I actually
need to do some more research on this very topic, so would be more than
happy to correspond with you off-list on the minor details.
I asked a similar question back when I running the W2K beta and could not
get to my SAMBA shares:
Has anyone found a way to access the 'old' SAMBA 1.9.16p9 from Windows 2000
Professional? Our old friend, enableplaintextpassword, seems to be a horse
of a different stripe in W2KPro.
And this is the recommendation I got, although I think W2K Server will also
work as a password server as well as NT (although maintaining a user.map
file will likely prove tedious):
I'd probably first try using
an NT machine as "password server" in smb.conf (with security=server
and a well-maintained user.map file). -- Why? Because it also made
Samba/iX 0.7c talk to PC's which require encrypted passwords.
Also, IIRC, CIFS is more or less the next evolution of the SMB protocol, and
should be compatible with SAMBA. I expect future flavors of SAMBA to add any
important new features.

Subject: Windows 2000 and Samba?
We are in the process of converting from Windows NT 4.0 to Windows
2000. I'm running MPE/iX 6.0 pp1 on my HPe3000 servers. I'm wondering
if Samba will work with Windows 2000? Are there any plans to use CIFS
(Common Internet File System) on the HPe3000? I'm just a worried
System Manager. Thanks.
