To make the source of my confusion more clear, I normally have not entered
the documentation page through the "front door". Rather, I have

     http://docs.hp.com/mpeix

bookmarked on all of my browswers. This is the page that has changed -- and
the one from which you can no longer reach the 5.0/5.5 manuals (and which
obviously mildly panicked me). This is also the page that the "By Topic" link
goes to if you select MPE Documentation on the first page.
