From a performance perspective I would rather see at least one more spindle
for the system volume set.

Again, from a performance perspective you could use more spindles.
Remember that you are going from 10 spindles to 4.  Generally not a good
situation.  But as every good performance person will tell you: "It
depends".  If you aren't doing a lot of I/O, it doesn't matter if you
continue to not do a lot of I/O but on fewer spindles. YMMV.
