Thanks,

It looks like the 318416N has a larger on-board cache and a 20%
better MTBF.

I am not sure I am following your threads properly and I don't remember
seeing the description of your system with respect to SCSI controllers.
However, if you are looking at simply having some disk space for very little
money, I would recommend you get a current or near-current production LVD/SE
SCSI drive (maybe 120GB), place it in a SCSI enclosure in the cabinet
somewhere and connect it to one of the external SE-SCSI connectors. The
enclosure can do the switch from fast/wide to fast only (68 pins to 50 pins)
or you can buy a SCSI cable that will do that and you should be good to go.

No. All we have is a plain jane 918/LX with two 2GB internal
drives, one the system volume and one the private data volume. We
have just begun the process of moving our main business application
off the HP3000 to CentOS linux and are simply interested in
reducing the amount of manual tending the HP3000 requires during
the transition period. It is intended to ftp the resulting file to
a local (behind the firewall) linux box and then ssh it to our
Mississauga location. This will eliminate the use of tapes (other
than for the monthly cslt), the associated labour and record
keeping, and the off-site transport and storage (which, to be
frank, is pretty much hit and miss during the summer and is a
source of some concern).

An inexpensive disc upgrade that will allow backups to disc will
permit us to accomplish all this. There is a very limited amount
of space left in the rack containing the 918, (5 louvres worth in
fact) and I doubt that an external disc enclosure from HP would
fit. However, if I am wrong then I am certainly open to that
solution.

Regards,
Jim
