And if you read further into Pub 561, you should find that Page 6 concerning
"comparable sales" for real estate is probably the most appropriate section
for judging the FMV of your equipment. The section on cars, boats, and
airplanes, which might seem at first glance to be the more appropriate
section, depends heavily on the the presence of having trade organizations
regularly publish price guides for the various models of equipment, something
that doesn't occur in our business.

Rather the comparable sales method makes its determination based on the
recent selling price of equipment as nearly identical in composition and
functional condition as can be deduced. So long as you can reasonably
validate your claims using this method, the IRS won't argue.
