How about take advantage of client - server technology,
I suggest to use Microsoft product, most company already own Excel, Word
and almost standard office tool with our PC clients, We use Minisoft
emulation
to connect HP3000 via TCP/IP and Use NFT to down load report file to their
PC to mimic their custom report, Now with ODBC/32 with Access97 easy than
ever Access 97 link IMAGE/SQL dataset and guide through MS Access Report
wizard to create select statement with SQL like statement and just position
of report
item from HP3000/Image Item and font sometime attach graphic files from PC
too
once finished print preview and touch up and print, user use this report
repeatedly
Just add to report menu on Access dataset(actually reside in HP3000 Image
set)
and use Office development KIt about $500 from Microsoft and deploy to NT or
NetWare directory, use click report deply setup.exe they got a new report.
and also you can report to fax through quicklink to vendor too.
we pay first ODBC/32 cost about $1000(?) and office development tool kit
$500(?)
you could copy report object so many, report is no longer headache to me and
preview
make them to print or not to save paper too one of fast method and pretty
inexpensive too
one catch faster workstation Pentium-II with 233 or greater and 100 Mb
network card
helps lot.

...to which I would add: QueryCalc from AICS! A top-notch product from a
vendor with an excellent reputation, who contributes regularly to the HP3000
community. See http://www.aics-research.com/ for details.

And before you jump on the RPG bandwagon, you might want to look at the
current price. It isn't exactly free, and it has a *steep* learning curve.
And the "code" is butt-ugly -- you can't read an RPG listing without a magic
decoder ring (or template).
