As to profitability - remember that various Linux distribution companies
actually survive (somehow) by selling and supporting a 'product' that essentially
is given away for free. Profitability is simply a matter of controlling
expenses to keep them in line with revenue.
If 1000 MPE using organizations commited to paying say $1000 per year for a
set of MPE 8.0-ish enhancements, could a small organization turn a profit on
$1,000,000 a year in revenue? I think so.
All that is really needed is source code and appropriate licensing to use the
code.
