Obviously we can't do that.
What we can do is get MPE technology recognized as vital for America's
business and security interests. This would "force" HP not to allow MPE to
be hidden away and lost. There are precedents for this in other
technologies.
One example is the government has stepping in a requiring drug makers to
make drugs that are not as profitable as the company would wish. In other
cases companies have been forced to stockpile spare parts. I am sure there
are other cases.
The point is that if we wish for the MPE code to be saved and available then
a little political activism is not amiss. HP may come to this conclusion all
on its own without a friendly shove on our part. I just believe that a
Senator or two on our side can't hurt.
The opinions expressed herein are my own and not necessarily those of my
employer.
