You would need to disassemble the drive to get close enough to the
platters to actually degauss them.  If you found a way to degauss the 
drive you would need to find a way to low level format to make the
drive usable again. Defense contractors used to be satisfied if
you high level formatted the drive 3 times with a utility such as
volutil or diskexpt. Sorry don't know the latest rules. Our
security sensitive customers are doing media retention. That is
where people actually beat up the drive with hammers before they
melt (burn special) it.
