As I understand it, Expedia (and others) buy blocks of rooms at preferred
rates and then re-sell them within their own system. That means that the
Expedia rooms do not show on the main hotel reservations system as being
available and visa versa. I assume that as the date draws near, there may
be a mechanism for Expedia to turn the rooms back to the hotel.
