<<I have a HP Netserver "LC" 486 EISA DX4-100 Mhz PC. I need to replace
the 1 Gig hard drive with a new or refurbished drive. I want a drive that
is in the 2-4 Gig range. On the mother board is an Adaptec 2740
controller that supports SCSI-II.
Any non-HP solutions out there that work?>>
To put it simply, "SCSI is SCSI"; any SCSI drive that will work with an
AHA-2740 or equivalent SCSI adapter (which means almost any SCSI drive
you can buy) will work in your NetServer.
Electrically, that is; mechanically, you have to be able to get the drive
mounted. Our NetServer LS has six hot-swap drive bays that use the 80-pin
SCA ("Single Connector Attachment") connector, though they are only 8-bit
drives. The drives in these slots are a mix of Quantum Atlas 34300 and
IBM drives-all of which were received when the HP-specified part number
for this unit was used to buy them from an authorized HP reseller, and
they have HP part-number stickers on them. I realize that the LC doesn't
have these slots; I mention it only to show that non-HP drives are
"standard" for this box.
We also have a 2GB Fujitsu boot drive in the LS's only available
horizontal bay; as nearly as I can tell, this is the same as the three
horizontal drive bays on the LC under the CD ROM drive. The kicker is
finding a tray to mount the drive in; you can get one from HP (the part
number should be on the sticker inside the top of your LC box), or you
can scrounge around; we ended up using some trays that (I think) came
with the external drive enclosures for our HP3000.
IOW, almost any current SCSI drive should work perfectly in your LC, as
long as you can get it mounted into the box.
