Wow, 500 to 1000ms are long times... More typical from what I have seen
is 50-150ms with 1-4% data loss with 802.11b.   The distance & structural density between the wireless base station antenna and the client wireless card as reported in signal strength (typically an indicator on the laptop wireless card or on the software driver icon) can have an impact on performance / throughput and data loss.  One thing I have tried is switching the wireless channel number (default is typically 6)...  For now in my environment I am seeing a greater signal strength with channel 4. YMWV!  You may need to experiment with different locations & distances from the wireless base station antenna and the performance you see on the signal strength indicator and with ping.

The impact when connecting to the 3000 is:

01) Telnet w/out Advanced Telnet will be poor performing as it performs
    echo at the host of every keystroke input.
02) Telnet w/Advanced Telnet option will be better performing as it
    performs local client echo.
03) NS-VT will be better performing as the NS-VT product has always
    blocked all of it's character input and performs local client echo.

Any TCP packet that is lost or is not acknowledged within the
"Retransmission Interval Lower Bound" will need to be resent.  The above TCP timers support the fastest possible re-send (retransmission).

Note: The longer the time before a retransmission is performed (in the case of a lost packet) the slower it appears your connection is.
