I agree that this is a mess and that we want to use tar for future
archiving. In fact, tar can be used for all 5.5 MPE systems. So, if
you are packaging freeware destined for a 5.5 system please consider using
tar. However, most of our customers are still on 5.0 and the 5.0 tar
does not preserve MPE file attributes. Also the 5.5 version of tar
does not work correctly on 5.0. So tar packaging cannot be used on 5.0
systems (neither as the target system nor as the archiving system).

Where does that leave us? If you have 3 versions of mover you can get
almost all of the freeware on jazz (some is still in ryder format).
The worst case is that on your 3rd try to are able to unarchive the file.
I may be way off but this doesn't seem too horrible to me.

Note: only mover635 and 651 are available on jazz. I can put mover522(? -
the mover found in prvxl.telesup on 5.0 systems) there too if needed.
