The 'barbaric European sizes such as A4' are not all that barbaric but based
on a rational system of sizes starting at the size A0 which is 1 sq mt in
area. Each subsequent size A1, A2, A3 etc, being half the size of the
previous size and constructed by folding the larger size in half. The ratio
of the height to the width being the 'magic ratio',  square root 2 : 1.
