For standalone memory diagnostics, check out Memtest86
(http://www.memtest86.com/) or Memtest86+ (http://www.memtest.org/).  I
think one or both of these are included on the Ultimate Boot CD.

For hard drive related diagnostics I usually boot a live Linux CD and use a
combination of smartctl (from the smartmontools package) and the badblocks
command.
