As I understand it, the people at Guantanamo are being detained not as
criminal but as prisoners of a military action. Totally different standards.
Something being upheld by the US courts.

I m not aware of being denied their religouse beliefs. As a matter of fact,
i understand from the media (again I dont' always believe them either) that
the detainees are be allowed any reasonable access to their belief (baby
killing and airplanes into buildings not being allowed).

Quote "Former prisoners at the base claim that detainees are chained to the
ceiling, shackled so tightly that the blood flow stops, kept naked and
hooded and kicked to keep them awake for days on end. " end quote.

Hardly something to place a lot of validation to but as the article
indicates, an investigation is underway and the artilce states quote " If
the investigation finds that the prisoners had been unlawfully killed during
interrogation, it could lead to both civil and military prosecutions. " end
quote.

Both items which you failed to note.

As to the murder aspect., the article says nothin about murder. The article
does state that the homicide box was checked but also notes that they dont
know the events up to the death. Again something you failed to note.

>>The US, UK, France, Germany all have plenty of dirt on their hands from
dealing with Saddam in the >>past.

I agree with this statement. None are saints.
Any country that firmly believes that the US has violated a law, treaty or
agreement so much to the point they wish military action to enforce that
law, treaty or agreement is well within their rights to do so. I dont think
that any have done that to date.

Finally, nothing in life is free. Countries which hold out their hand for
aid have to expect to give something in return. That include Germany. BTW,
I have not seen in the media where the USA has firmly stated that they will
withhold aid to any country.

Also, if is is desired to take these comments outside the list then I will
be more than happy to do. I m sure others are tired of this thread. However,
as long as these thpe of posts are made to the list then I will do also.

Subject: [HP3000-L] OT : US uses Indian 'threat' to force Pak support

Dave Swanson writes:
> In the process he (Saddam) breaks damn near every International law,
treaty, or agreement which governs
the treatment of criminals, citizens, enemy troops, and even animals! He
violates about the same number of laws governing the use of chemical
weapons.

Take individuals, do not charge them with any crime, detain them
indefinitely, deny them access to lawyers,
refuse to identify who is actually being held, deny them the ability to
follow their religious beliefs (unless they "cooperate"),
refuse access by family and friends...the list goes. That's Guantanamo Bay
detention camp by the way.

Two prisoners at Bagram Air Base are murdered due to the severity of
beatings they received (an inquiry, I understand, will take place).

That Saddam ought to go, that he is truly vicious and brutal, I totally
agree and I've not seen anyone on the list say he is anything else. But lets
not get all saintly about what we are up to in the name of freedom and
democracy. The US, UK, France, Germany all have plenty of dirt on their
hands from dealing with Saddam in the past. All (except Germany I believe)
are using aid money as a lure and its removal as a threat against the
undecided UN nations. Truly shameful.

If violating laws, agreements and treaties is behind the current position
with Iraq, shouldn't we be upholding a few ourselves?
