I did exactly this; however in my case I used

MKNOD "/dev/TAPE8 c 0 8"

and

tar -xvf /dev/TAPE8

I get the reply request on the console:

[10]:?11:21/#S345/73/IS "TAPE8" ON LDEV#8 (Y/N)?

I respond :reply 73,y

and the question just repeats. Could the problem have something to do with
the ANSI standard label on the tape: A00002(ANSI) as displayed in a showdev?
