Oh yes, this bring up memories (although I'm only 6+ years with MPE ;-)

I recall having used multiple RESTOREs with several "interleaved"
indirect files to fill the directory blocks in such a way (order)
that all the files finally came back to disc.

Don't recall the details but it was something like use TAPLIS to get
"RESTORE;;LISTDIR" and then use editor while-loops to seperate this
into "cleverly selected file groups" for 1st and 2nd RESTORE pass...
