It's not so much Java the language, it's everything around it.

I guess, with my limited knowledge, the set up and installation of Beans and
general services was too complex, in my opinion. I'm sure once you're used
to it, like anything, it's easy, but if you're starting out, you don't want
to have to download different files, then run 3 or 4 install routines and
adjust all sorts of variables (classpath, etc).

In my opinion as a developer I expect all these set-up and config options to
be simple. Maybe some of my problem is I'm trying to use it with JBOSS and
MySQL.

On top of that I can't find a decent IDE, the one supplied by SUN (written
in Java), was so slow and buggy, it wasn't worth using.

What would sell Java, which will sell .NET, in my opinion, is the simplicity
and power of the IDE (Visual Studio), the simple install and the speed in
which you can deploy a web application. If Sun could package the thing
properly (all in my opinion) where it involves a simple download a few
'next' clicks and your up and away, then I would be happy, but there's too
much more to do.

I agree with your thoughts about the Linux version though. I am led to
believe by colleagues that it already runs better under Linux/Apache than
IIS. Let's hope they continue to support it.

I will add that I'm more used, to using Cognos Powerhouse, so maybe I
expecting too much to be done for me.

I can't claim any knowledge about C# and have just started to read up on
.NET and just loaded up Visual Studio.NET, but I have had no problems with
using Java. Well, I've been very disappointed in the speed of Java on MPE
(based on pre-hotspot versions). I worry that .NET does not run on Linux
yet and am a little concerned that MS could sabotage Mono (Linux)
compatibility. (They wouldn't do that, would they???) Java is certainly
more mature than C# at this time.

As for Web Services, how are you disappointed with Java? I have seen Java
classes that perform just about every network protocol, excellent XML
parsers and decent data access services. Web Services still seems to be a
standard in-flux, so I don't know what framework successfully implements it.
What specifically bothers you?

Mark
