When Windows 95 was created, USB did not exist. USB started appearing in
late 1996, early 1997. At that time, MS released an update to Windows 95,
called OSR 2.5, with support for USB. The interesting thing is that a lot
of computers were sold with non-functional USB ports. The ports were there,
but just didn't work. This was not a function of the OS, they were just not
enabled.

When Windows 98 came out, it had full support for USB and that was one of
the big features of this OS. Windows NT did not have support for USB, ever.
This support only came to NT based OS with the advent of Windows 2000 and I
can tell you that it works very well on this OS.

Now, for your friend's predicament. Yes, a PC card USB controller is a
great idea. The package for this card will have the list of supported OS,
and it should be examined very closely.

Kind regards,

Denys. . .

Okay, we have a guy here who bought his daughter a CD burner that only has
USB connectivity. She has a notebook computer that does not have USB
capability. He is buying a PCMCIA USB card to use with the CD burner. Are
you saying that Win 95 may not support this? FWIW, I don't know for sure
what OS is on the notebook.

Thanks,
