Newfoundland is indeed 1/2 hour ahead of Atlantic time, or 1 and 1/2 hour
ahead of Eastern time.  This is not the only place in the world with
non-whole hour time zone.  I refer you to the South Pacific where some time
zones are on the quarter and the three quarter hour.

Having had my interest piqued by this discussion, I peeked at TZTAB.  Is it
true that Newfoundland is half an hour off from the rest of us (or vice
verse)? And does Japan not have an entry, or are they covered by one of the
time zones but not named?
