I'd be flabbergasted if the most stable operating system(according to the
end users I work with) ever developed for large scale use was "abandoned"
without something better replacing it. After all, what is more important to
your OLTP than stability? Furthermore, I'm guessing that HP makes a ton of
money from it.  Third, I'm guessing that HP is working with Microsoft on
some sort of MPE stability for the desktop.  I don't see the 3000 going
anywhere for some time.
