I must admit that I quoted Myers' comments from memory, but the transcript of
yesterday's "Meet the Press" is now up on the web. He said in full:
GEN. MYERS: "No, I don’t think it is fair. I think from the very beginning,
and anybody that’s listened to anything that I’ve had to say or other senior
military officers, to include General Franks or the secretary, nobody ever
promised a short war. We thought it’d be sort of uneven. We thought it would
not be linear; that there would be some parts that would go quicker than
other parts. I think the toughest part is ahead of us as we start to engage
the Republican Guard divisions that are arrayed around Baghdad. But nobody
should have any illusions that this is going to be a quick and easy victory.
This is going to be a tough war, a tough slog yet, and no responsible
official I know has ever said anything different once this war has started."
