Can you abort the IO? Using ABORTIO and then abort the job?

We have a 918LX that has a fully backup to a HDD stalled.  The system
is up but all the databases are locked to updates due to the
incomplete full backup.

There is no message on the console respecting this issue.  The backup
reported that it was 28% complete and then stopped.  We cannot abort
the backup job.  Discfree stalls when trying to read the store-to-disk
hdd (ldev3).  I have nothing to go on insofar as a diagnosis is
concerned.

Do I need to reboot the system to get things back to operational status?
