Are you replacing any other third-party products such as Suprtool, MPEX,
etc? See below for other comments.

Subject: HP3000 to Unix conversion

It is with great reluctance we have decided to move from our HP3000 to the
HPUX. I am hoping there are still enough people around that can give me some

advice on products to use for spooling and batch processing.
[chf] Our product, SunGard Bi-tech Transport, provides MPE-like JCL,
Spooling and we provide HP and third-party products replacement.

We use Speedware for development so that is not a problem
[chf] Are you going to an RDBMS or Eloquence? We assisted a customer with a
Speedware to Oracle (native Oracle) migration recently and it was a big
deal.
but we use
Fantasia to produce forms and mail merge data for monthly and yearly
statements. Openseas has a product to move Fantasia over to the UNIX box
but we feel it is a little pricey.

[chf] It is not horribly difficult or expensive for someone with UNIX and
scripting skills. However, it might prove to be a challenge for a do it
yourselfer.

We have found the best solution is to use Adobe PDF oriented open source
products to do this. The idea is to convert the forms you are going to
merge with to PDF and then convert your HP 3000 print output to PDF and
merge the two. The idea is to use one of the UNIX open source products that
translate from text to postscript (i.e. A2ps, enscript, etc.) and then from
Postscript to PDF using something like ps2pdf. Finally, you use any one of
a number of PDF merge tools to do the merge. All of this is assembled
together in a script and automated.

I hope there are some people that still belong to this blog that have gone
thru
this conversion and are willing to share their thoughts. Thanks
