I found the source of the problem and the cause. The first method of
name resolution that I used was to add the SMTP gateway into the NSDIR
using NMMGR. Later on, I enabled DNS resolution on the first HP-3000
system and the production HP-3000. Mail worked from the production
system and then I got it working on the first system after removing
the entry in NSDIR and the name from cache using NETTOOL. After
further testing I found that the NSDIR entry works if the TCP Checksum
option is checked "Y". Now that that problem has been resolved, it
brings up another question. Should TCP checksum be enabled for the
other entries in NSDIR? What are the advantages/disadvantages? Would
it have to be set up on both sides of HP-3000 to HP-3000 links? What
about printers and HP-9000 systems? What about PXP (Y/N) and the
checksum option in the PXP parameters in NMCONFIG?

Hi,
i think, your problem resides from missing ip-routing entries.
To fix this, you should try to ping the hp3000 from the smtp-gateway.
If this does not work, you will have to add an entry in the
routing-table on the gateway.
Try the same from the 3000 to the gateway.
If you manage, to get the connection(ping) from both sides, you
should also be able to send email!

Stan,
I've loaded the mail program and tried to run it. I get a Socket
IPRECV time out error. I've configured DNS (which works) and also
have the NT SMTP gateway loaded in NMMGR directory. The HP-9000
sends
to the gateway without any problem. This shop doesn't have any
Telamon products so I'm can't get any support and I don't know where
to get documentation for the program. What is missing?

Yes. Telamon has a mail program that does it, free. Works well.

Check: ftp://ftp.telamon.com/dist/mail.nm
or: ftp://ftp.telamon.com/dist/mail.nm.wrq
