As I recall from the starting days of HP3000-L, after reports from
Interex and WRQ, there was a WRQ product for mail (a Desk add-on?)
that didn't like the "/" character in addresses.  In fact, it would
crash their mail system :-)

The avoidance of the "/" is probably a vague memory of that problem.
