Greetings, people of -L.

                   <<< Rant On >>>
I've just completed a disturbing round of emails with Cognos. I'm a
consultant in a SMALL shop, working a 937/LX 64-user license. Apparently,
the machine's value on the open market is exceeded by a 1996 Saturn coupe,
but I digress.

A project has presented that'll involve substantial programming, changes,
etc. Having used Powerhouse extensively in the past, I thought I'd get some
pricing.
Management indicated they'd spend some $$$.....

OK...Suprtool prices < $5000., not bad....how about Cognos?

I had a conversation with a sales rep, peppered with my 'conventional HP
3000' wisdom......shrinking base, good opportunity to put a foot in the door
with an eye toward other products, etc....

I kinda felt I'd charged the salesguy with 'making magic'...loss-leader
pricing for a real small environment.

Well, folks, with a fabulous 'September incentive', the price for
'Powerhouse Reporting Only' is $12,000.

An informal poll, and Please respond publicly.......

Am I WAY off-base thinking that $12K is like a ripoff to like the 3rd or 4th
power? Offline discussions have iterated that this is standard Cognos
behavior.

BTW, am interested ONLY in thoughts on the above---I'm not looking to start
a 4-6gb thread on the relative merits of development environments!!!!!!!!
                   <<< Rant Off >>>

Thanks In Advance,

Al "Didn't they used to hang thieves" Karman
IT consultant
