With apologies for the delay in this response, I want to thank
all who responded to my inquiry regarding a Java implementation
of the UN*X function crypt(3).

The solution that appears to work best is the one mentioned by Lars:

> Cryptix3 at www.cryptix.org has cryptix.tools.UnixCrypt
> and it seems to work.

Using the routine is relatively straightforward.  While I wish
the package was not bundled with so many functions, it certainly
fills the need.
