I actually think you may be correct about the serial ports.  Do you have any solutions to this type of problem.

Donald,

I suspect that your old 386 computer may not have the faster serial ports
(UART 16550) installed.  As a result, I think you are seeing "garbage"
characters on your screen.  Faster serial port cards may be available for
that model PC, but I don't really know for sure.
