Dear Terry,
Best book and resource that I have found is Inside SQL Server. I started
by reading the Inside SQL Server 2000, by Kalen Delaney (which is based
on
the first edition by Ron Soukup) This book reminded me of the Image/3000
Handbook, as it talks about architecture, using and performance.
This however was not the first book I read.
For starting on a topic or investigating a technology, I am a fan of
the SAMS Teach Yourself line of books. In this case I started with
Sams Teach Yourself SQL Server 2000 in 21 Days was a great resource
to start with. (Note that you can get used versions for 3 bucks or so
on AMAZON.
Finally, the Inside SQL Server by Kalen Delaney line has been updated
but is now four volumes. For more info see:
http://www.insidesqlserver.com/
and
http://www.sqlcommunity.com/
Great resources, but a little over-whelming to start.
Sincerely,
Neil Armstrong
